Joined Up Heritage Sheffield: Hillsborough and Owlerton Retale

Fri 27 September, 12:00pm 60 minutes

This is one of a series of talks arranged by Joined Up Heritage Sheffield.

Four cinefilms from the 1930s–1950s

The Hillsborough & Owlerton History Group has been awarded a £40,180 grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to preserve and revitalise the social history of Hillsborough. This initiative was sparked by the discovery of rare cinefilms offering a unique window into the area’s past which are being screened as part of the festival. Over two years, this project is engaging local schools and recruiting volunteers to record firsthand accounts from older residents, enriching the community’s connection to its history. The project also includes the recent launch of ‘Growing Up In 1930s Hillsborough’, an autobiography by Thomas Douglas Peck, detailing his life through the Great Depression and WWII. The culmination of this extensive research and community involvement will be showcased in an upcoming exhibition and the publication of further books, ensuring the legacy of Hillsborough’s rich social heritage is celebrated and preserved.
