Day in and day out, our researchers work tirelessly to address some of the world’s greatest challenges, from pioneering technological breakthroughs and building a sustainable future, to advancing global health equality for us all. But research isn’t always for a laboratory or a lecture hall and this is where Festival of the Mind lets these ideas break free.

What makes this festival so special is the incredible creative spark behind it. This year we have 43 unique collaborations pairing our excellent researchers with Sheffield’s vibrant local artistic talent. Together they’ve transformed some of our most complex research into accessible and thought provoking talks, jaw dropping exhibitions, hands-on interactive displays and captivating live performances. From the frontiers of robotics and future tech to deep dives into history, culture, politics, and the arts, there is something here to spark every imagination. An event of this scale takes a whole community to build. Our heartfelt thanks goes to Sheffield City Council, our wonderful partner venues, the dedicated Festival team, our academic colleagues, staff, student volunteers and all of our creative partners.

We also extend our deepest gratitude to Professor Vanessa Toulmin, who is stepping down as Festival Director this year. From the festival’s inception in 2011, her vision, drive and leadership has reshaped and enhanced our cultural landscape by taking University of Sheffield research from our campus and bringing it directly to so many locations across our city. Thank you, Vanessa, for sparking our curiosity and leaving a vibrant creative legacy that will inspire Sheffield for years to come.

Most importantly thanks to you – our audience. A festival like this is just an empty room without your interest, your energy, and your willingness to explore. You bring these ideas to life, turning our discoveries into public conversations that often lead to future research projects

I’m absolutely thrilled to welcome you to Festival of the Mind 2026!
